Glocks for Hunters?
The Myth: Glocks are simply self-defense & have no role for hunters.
There’s no question that Glock handguns are amongst the most common choices for defensive, law enforcing, & military use throughout the world, & for a good reason: they’re incredibly reliable, lightweight, relatively inexpensive & quite right.
The GLOCK 20
The GLOCK 20, in 10mm AUTO, provides nothing short of heavy firepower especially suited for hunting. The method of GLOCK hi-tech polymer considerably decreases felt the recoil. With muzzle energy of 550 ft/lbs, & a magazine capacity of 15 rounds, this 10mm is your reliable companion on every hunt. The G20 also provides a safe & just finishing shot, even when hunting big game. This will not be an evaluation from a concealed-carry perspective. It’s a loaded-sized gun, in a full-sized chambering, & I am not interested in how well I can conceal it under a jacket. I am approaching this analysis as an evaluation from the perspective of a handgun hunter.
But first, let’s take a fast look at the Glock 20 itself. The G20 is built on the whole-sized polymer frame, so it is no delicate flower. Full-sized is also the manner in which I would describe the grip. The st&ard magazine capacity is 15 rounds & the st&ard barrel length is 4.6 inches & gets equipped with fixed front & rear sights. Fully loaded, the Glock 20 tips the scales at just less than 40 ounces. I will spare you the mechanical features as that is not why we are here.
I ordered this RMR mounting kit by Strike Industries from Brownell’s. We also added the voluntary charging handle to aid in cycling the slide with the RMR mounted. Author Photo
Okay, so I’ve asked more than a few Glocks in my lifetime & the thing that holds with me the greatest is that they are dead reliable & seem always to run. However, I never really considered one as a serious hunting piece. For me, hunting handguns exist no more than six rounds, or five if chambered in a meaningful caliber. As I mentioned earlier, my regular carry guns are revolvers. Don’t roll your eyes; there is nothing more valuable than reliability, efficiency & familiarity with regards to your carry gun.
